WINTER BIRDS

On January 16, we helped celebrate Martin Luther King Day with a family program on the birds of winter. Younger children made peanut butter bird feeders and talked about bird adaptations for gathering food. We watched birds at the park feeders and even heard the songs of the birds we saw. A few hearty souls braved freezing weather to walk park trails. We have a regular red headed woodpecker and have seen bald eagles near the river.

2012 WALKED IN

Friends, neighbors, and pets started 2012 with a January 1 walk in the park. Although rain threatened, the day was warm and we put in about two miles of good fellowship with refreshments following at the visitor’s center.

NATIVE PLANTS FOR WILDLIFE

John Harris, prominent local landscape architect and President of the Shenandoah Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists, spoke on April 5, 2011 at the monthly meeting of the Friends. John developed a native plant plan for the Park’s visitor center which was partially completed last Fall and which will be continued on Earth Day 2012 – Sunday April 22 at 10am. More to follow.

ALL THINGS BLUEBIRD

The Friends March 2011 meeting featured a presentation on bluebirds by Roger Temples, the Virginia Bluebird Society’s coordinator for Page County.

The Virginia Bluebird Society was founded in 1999 to promote bluebirds and other native cavity nesters. The Society seeks to promote bluebird conservation projects, establish and support a statewide network of bluebird trails, create a consistent protocol for monitoring and record keeping of nest box trails, be a resource for research and data collection of native cavity nesters in the State of Virginia, and develop educational programs and materials to promote bluebird awareness.

We are looking for individuals to monitor a few of the Park’s bluebird boxes in 2012. If you would like to know more get back to us or leave a message with the Park, 540-622-6840.

Friends group hosts Youth Conservation Corps awards ceremony

Park manager Tony Widmer congratulates a fairly enthusiastic group of graduates at the 2010 Youth Conservation Corps at Shenandoah River State Park July 10, 2010. Junior Ranger Day Camp for children 7 – 12 years old!!

Andy Guest/ Shenandoah River State Park will hold its 2011 Junior Ranger Day Camp for children 7 – 12 years old during the week of July 25 to 29 and repeating August 1 to 5. Sessions run from 10am to 12 noon each day. Activities will include an introduction to the Park, hikes, nature study, and crafts all designed to enhance a child’s awareness of, and appreciation for, the natural environment. Each child will receive a Shenandoah River State Park Junior Ranger certificate.
